There are similarities and crossovers - the main difference is that Strategic Roadmaps are more encompassing of the business and look to all aspects where as Digital Transformation is more targeted at existing manual or digital system(s) that needed to be digitised or improved. Both are business focused to ensure alignment with your business objectives.
- Using the word transformation can be grandiose, transformations can be any size. The purpose is to move a manual process to digital or to improve and existing digital process. This means information technology will be required, hardware, software or both.
- The thing to be cognizant about is being business driven. Digital Transformations need to be justified based on the investment, risk and benefit to the business. It’s easy to get caught up in a “wash” - Cloud wash, AI wash, etc. These are enablers for the business not justifications in their own right. Avoid FOMO and step back, what are you trying to improve that is business related? - Arben do consider the technology carefully, especially what you already have. We have a “mini” service called Start, Stop, Continue that helps you understand your business digital landscape. This identifies stuff you are doing well and should Continue, stuff that’s adding no value and often obfuscating things so should Stop, and new stuff that will really help, the Start part - all pragmatic and cost effective, no unnecessary tech.
